(Liverpool-Seoul City Exchange)

Liverpool- Seoul City X change
Introduction / Park Eunseon, Listen to the City

It is almost impossible to understand the contemporary city, a gathering of so many individuals, as a unified entity. Its constituents draw up vague images of the city in which they live, baseon their own particular experience and imagination, but their perception of their own city is fragmented in a similar way to that of an infant before the moment she realizes with the help of a mirror that she is an individual. Individual experiences sometimes overlap and contradict each other. There is nothing that can bind together all of these feelings and experiences.

But those in charge of administering the city create symbols and slogans to suit their own purposes. They work hard to create the impression that their city functions according to theseslogans; they want citizens to believe in them and follow them. Some citizens assimilate, consciously or unconsciously, to these symbols; some discover the rift between the created symbols and reality. City symbols and slogans dreamed up overnight by governments (“Design Seoul” or “Culture Liverpool”), and the various symbols promoted in commercial advertisements and media that represent the city, are in fact no more than narcissistic images. They have no particular relation to reality.

Listen to the City in Seoul and Static in Liverpool planned a “Liverpool-Seoul city exchange” as a way of observing realities beyond the fabricated symbols of cities. We wanted to act asmirrors reflecting each other cities, peeling away fabricated symbols to reveal the truth. We asked people from each city, who had never been to the other, what their image of it was (“What image do you have of Liverpool?” / “What image do you have of Seoul?”). Listen to the City created an alternative architecture school for the general public and asked people who had never been to Liverpool to make drawings, maps and models of the city and to write pieces of fiction about it. This novel, composed of seven chapters, is written about Liverpool by people who have never been to Liverpool. It achieves what Milan Kundera called “the thing that only novels can do” Static made urban models of Seoul with architecture students at Liverpool John Moores University.

The Seoul participants did not investigate or discuss Liverpool before writing about it and were subject to no rules, but nonetheless managed masterfully to come up with seven commonthemes. Most of them wrote about images derived from the place name “Liverpool” itself. Due to the Korean language’s lack of distinction between L and R, many of them mistook “Liver” for “River,” and because “pool”, when written in the Korean alphabet, also means “grass” many of them drew tranquil, serene cities detached from time and place. This was a totally differentdirection from the football and Beatles we had expected them to imagine. Another result was that, although our original intention was for “city exchange” to act as a mirror reflecting eachother’s cities and exposing their realities, we ended up with images of the kinds of ideal city that the Seoul participants desired, which exposed the realities of the city they themselves live in.
